Silence – The Ultimate Test of Faith
Silence a historical period drama by Academy Award® winner and celebrated director, Martin Scorsese, tells the story of two 17th-century Portuguese missionaries, Father Sebastian Rodrigues and Father Francisco Garupe, who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor, at a time when Christianity was outlawed. If caught by feudal lords or ruling samurai, they must renounce their faith or face a prolonged and agonizing death.
The film marks the culmination of Scorsese’s 28-year journey to bring Shusaku Endo’s 1966 acclaimed novel of the same name to life. Set in Nagasaki, Japan, the film was shot entirely in Taiwan around Taipei. The film stars Academy Award® nominee Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Academy Award® winner Liam Neeson, Tadanobu Asano and Ciarán Hinds. The story is set in the time of Kakure Kirishitan (“Hidden Christians”) which followed the defeat of the Shimabara Rebellion (1637–1638) of Japanese Roman Catholics against the Tokugawa shogunate. The screenplay is written by Jay Cocks and Scorsese.
