A new production of Puccini’s Tosca, conducted by Emmanuel Villaume and directed by Sir David McVicar, will be transmitted live this Saturday, January 27, 2018, 12:55 p.m. at Carib 5. The stakes are high in Tosca and it has just about everything a modern opera could ask for: political intrigue, foreign interests collision, sexuality, manipulation and fake news, all at the center of a passionate love affair between a celebrated singer and an artiste.
McVicar, the inspired Scottish director whose new production of Norma opened the season in September, has returned Puccini’s great tragedy of love and politics specifically to Rome in the 1800’s, three days after Napoleon won the battle of Marengo in Piedmont.
Tosca is the second of two new productions by Sir David McVicar with the company this season. He made his Met debut in 2009 staging Il Trovatore, followed by Handel’s Giulio Cesare, and the double bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci. McVicar has also staged multiple operas around the world including at the Vienna State Opera, English National Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Frankfurt Opera and Scottish Opera.
The January 27 matinee performance hosted by Isabel Leonard, is the fourth in this season’s: Live in HD transmissions and be will seen in more than 2,000 movie theaters in 73 countries including Jamaica.
